Final Astronomy Days lecture tonight at Bradbury Science Museum

By Erika L. Martinez

June 29, 2007

Stars, comets and planets ... Oh My!

They’ve tracked an asteroid, took part in observing the universe from Fenton Hill Observatory and have been able to work with the Lab, exploring astrophysics. Want to hear more?

The public can hear several Earthwatch students talk about these experiences this evening at the Bradbury Science Museum. "Transient Phenomena in Astrophysics" is part of the museum’s “Astronomy Days” lecture series. The talk begins at 6:30 p.m., and is free and open to the public.

Astronomy Days also is part of the museum’s Summer Adventures in Science program. The museum is part of the Community Programs Office (CPO).

Michael Chen, Clare Constantine, Andrew Gott, Steven Lippert, Leah Wang, Kathryn Woo, and Pia Yarnell, all high school students associated with Thermonuclear Applications (X-2) are this evening’s scheduled speakers.

The students are part of the Earthwatch program, a two-week program at Los Alamos. Founded in 1971, Earthwatch supports scientific field research by offering volunteers the opportunity to join research teams around the world. This unique model is creating a systematic change in how the public views science and its role in environmental sustainability.

According to their mentor, Francis Timmes of X-2, the students will speak about their research at Los Alamos during their two week immersion, including tracking an asteroid and computing its orbit; their reflections on their Lab and New Mexico experiences, which included traveling to the Very Large Array in Socorro; and observing runs at Fenton Hill Observatory.

“The speakers are excited about presenting their experiences,” said Timmes.

The talk is the last in the “Astronomy Days” Summer Adventures in Science series. For more information on the Summer Adventures in Science program, click here.
