Regional Business Leaders Help Local Waters and Chesapeake Bay While Improving Their Bottom Line
Businesses for the Bay honors companies for voluntarily reducing pollution entering local waters
Annapolis, Md. (January 31, 2006) - The Chesapeake Bay Program's Businesses for the Bay initiative has recognized several leading regional businesses, non-profit organizations, educational facilities and municipalities for their efforts to reduce the amount of chemicals and nutrients entering the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers.
Award recipients were selected by their peers and honored for their successful efforts to implement pollution prevention projects. Pollution prevention – reducing pollutants through equipment, technology and procedure modifications, or the redesigning of products – benefits businesses by helping improve their bottom line and helping improve the quality of their local environment.
“Restoring the Chesapeake Bay watershed requires governments, businesses and individuals working together to reach our common goals of a healthy environment and economy,” said Businesses for the Bay Coordinator Mary Lynn Wilhere. “These award-winning programs are a model for other Bay watershed businesses, showing their peers how to reduce pollution and save money at the same time.”
More than 700 companies and local municipalities throughout the Bay watershed are members of Businesses for the Bay (B4B). The program works with businesses, government facilities and other organizations to prevent pollution by reducing or eliminating waste at its source. During the 2004-2005 year, B4B members reduced or recycled more than 136 million pounds of waste and saved more than $3.8 million.
