Manure Management Clinic to focus on open feedlot manure issues

The Iowa Manure Management Action Group (IMMAG), in cooperation with Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and the College of Agriculture, is sponsoring a two-day Manure Management Clinic on August 22 and 23, at the Field Extension Education Laboratory (FEEL) near Ames. The purpose of this short course is to train service providers, commodity partners, agency personnel, and Iowa State University Extension field staff in issues related to manure management for open feedlots in Iowa. Producers are welcome to attend. "Service providers will find this clinic to be very helpful as they begin to work with open feedlot livestock producers who will be implementing nutrient management plans to meet both state and federal requirements," says Angela Rieck-Hinz, Iowa State University Extension program specialist.  Kapil Arora, ISU Extension field specialist, speaks at a 2005 Manure Management Clinic. This short course will include a combination of classroom and field activities. Participants will learn how to complete the new nutrient management plan forms developed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for open feedlots, manure sampling, the Iowa P Index, cattle manure and water quality issues, economics of manure, and financial and technical assistance resources available to producers. Hands-on field activities will look at manure application and calibration. Class size is limited to 60 and registrations are accepted on a first-received, first-paid basis.
