More info on soybean rust

The Iowa Soybean Rust Team is offering a video program on Asian soybean rust on March 11.

It will air from 10 a.m. to noon and will feature several Iowa State University Extension experts, along with representatives from the Iowa Department of Ag and Land Stewardship and the Iowa Soybean Association.

This program will give Iowa soybean producers and ag professionals a "status report" on the disease and, most important, offer an opportunity for them to ask questions. Each expert will provide a short presentation and then answer questions.

Questions can be submitted prior to the program via e-mail to isulink@iastate.edu or via fax at (515) 294-7767. The questions submitted ahead of time will be used to help determine the focus of the program. Include "Asian Soybean Rust Program" in the subject line so the question is routed correctly.

The program will be offered on satellite and the Web. The satellite coordinates are Intelsat 6 (Telstar 6), Channel 15 (vertical). The feed will start at 9:30 a.m. and the program will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Some Iowa State University Extension county offices are expected to make this program available for those interested in viewing the program. A list of the locations making the program available can be found on the extension calendar.

The Asian soybean rust program will be archived and available for later viewing at the Extension Video Archive.

A special issue of the ICM Newsletter focused on Asian soybean rust will be available around March 1. It is being produced to contain the latest crop management information available to prepare for the possible spread of Asian soybean rust to Iowa during the 2005 crop season.

The issue will address the types of fungicide to treat the disease including availability and application methods, along with the potential impacts of rust on soybean yield and grain quality, and a look at how the disease may spread from the southern United States to the Midwest.
