The Iowa State University Crop Adviser Institute (CAI) recently completed Soybean Aphid, a new interactive course module on CD-ROM. This the latest information available on soybean aphid, Aphis glycines, including the insect's life cycle; identification; potential for damage; current geographical distribution; and management.

The course CD contains many high-quality photographs, video microscopy of live aphids, graphics, summaries of the latest research results, and interactive segments designed to enhance the learning experience. It was authored by Iowa State University Extension soybean specialist Palle Pedersen, Iowa State University Extension entomologist Marlin E. Rice, Iowa State University Extension crop specialists Brian Lang and Todd Vagts, and Brent Brueland of the Iowa State University Agronomy Department.

Soybean aphids were first noticed in the Midwestern soybean producing region during the 2000 growing season. Since the initial discovery, soybean aphids have spread throughout the Midwest causing widespread, severe infestations in 2003. Yield losses may be severe if the pest is not controlled in a timely fashion.

This course module was developed as a continuing education tool for Certified Crop Advisers and other agricultural professionals and producers. It contains an optional examination that may be completed for continuing education unit (CEU) credit with the American Society of Agronomy. The course is available in 2 versions, the non-credit version is $5 and the version which allows on-line exam access for CCAs to gain 2 CEU credits in Pest Management is $30 (plus shipping).
