If you are concerned about soybean aphids, next season's weather, and about what you can do to become a better crop producer, plan to attend the Iowa State University's Crop Advantage Series in 2004.

ISU Extension is offering the third annual series of statewide conferences for farmers and agribusiness professionals. The program has expanded and will be at 10 different locations in Iowa, between January 5 and 22.

"We intend this to be for farmers who are students of farming," says Paul Kassel, Iowa State University Extension crop production specialist in northwest Iowa. He also says, "It's for those who desire more information - farmers, agribusiness professionals, farm managers and seed dealers. It's a statewide program offering in-depth crop education for Iowa farmers."

Topics Tailored to You

First, there is a general session at each location that is similar throughout the state. It covers topics of interest to all farmers. Then, many of the conferences have workshops or breakout sessions tailored to specific issues in that area of the state.

Each local conference in 2004 features two key speakers. Palle Pedersen, Iowa State University Extension soybean agronomist, will discuss "How to Grow 100 Bushel/Acre Soybeans." Elwynn Taylor, Iowa State University Extension climatologist, will present the "Crop Weather Outlook for 2004."The workshops and breakout sessions feature other Iowa State University Extension specialists presenting information on soil fertility, pest management, marketing, and crop production.

Continuing education credits for Certified Crop Advisers are available at each of the conferences. Many of the locations will also offer private pesticide applicator recertification.
