Early indications are that the first-generation European corn borer is not an economic problem across most of Iowa. Exceptions have been reported from both sides of the state along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Jim Russmann (FS Growmark, Council Bluffs) reports fields with damaging populations in southwestern Iowa and I received another report of large numbers of borers in Clinton County in eastern Iowa. All non-Bt cornfields should be scouted during the first 2 weeks of July for larvae in the whorls.
