Flexible Schedules, Compressed Work Weeks

Flexible schedules, compressed work weeks & teleworking help ease the burden on Washginton State road systems.

Flex schedules let employees work schedules that fit their lifestyle and allow them to commute more efficiently.

Some flex schedules allow a compressed work week - for example, four 10-hour days per week rather than five eight-hour days. Others allow employees to come and go from work on a custom schedule, for example, to accommodate a child's daycare schedule or a carpool or vanpool schedule.

Commute Trip Reduction

Does your employer have a Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) program? If you live in one of the state's nine counties with a population of 150,000 or more, and your worksite has more than 100 full-time employees who arrive to work between 6 and 9 a.m., your employer is affected by the CTR law.

To find out if your employer as a CTR program, contact WSDOT's CTR office in Olympia at (360) 705-7846.

Or, contact the CTR coordinator in your county:

Flex schedule concepts and terms

Compressed Work Week:
An 80-hour biweekly basic work requirement that is scheduled for less than 10 work days. This is often done as four 10-hour days with one day off, or nine nine-hour days with one day off every other week.

Core Hours:
Time periods during the work day, work week or pay period during which an employee covered by a flexible work schedule must be present for work.

Flexible Hours:
Times during the work day, work week or pay period during which an employee covered by a flexible work schedule may choose to vary his or her times of arrival to and departure from the worksite.

Flexible Work Schedule:
A full-time employee has an 80-hour biweekly basic work requirement, but may determine his or her own schedule within the limits set by the organization.

Flexitour:
The employee works an eight-hour day. He or she selects and commits to the same starting and stopping time each day, which falls within the flexible hours established by the organization.

Gliding Schedule:
The employee works an eight-hour day, but may vary his or her starting and stopping time each day as long as it falls within the flexible hours established by the organization.

Variable Day Schedule:
A work schedule with core hours on each work day. The employee is given the flexibility of choosing how many hours he or she works each work day, as long as he or she is present during the core work hours and works at least 40 hours each week.

Variable Week Schedule:
A work schedule with core hours on each work day. The employee is given the flexibility of choosing how many hours he or she works each day and/or each week, as long as he or she is present during the core work hours and works at least 80 hours over a two-week period.

Maxiflex:
A work schedule with core hours on fewer than 10 work days over a two-week period. The employee is given the flexibility of choosing how many hours he or she works each day and/or each week, as long as he or she is present during the core work hours and works at least 80 hours over a two-week period. This allows the employee to work a compressed work week.
