525 million oysters planted in 2008
1,100 acres of oyster reefs rehabilitated

The Oyster Recovery Partnership has established and implemented a cooperative oyster restoration effort among state and federal government agencies, scientists, watermen and conservation organizations. Our mission is to restore both the ecological and economic benefits of oysters to Chesapeake Bay by creating habitat through the rehabilitation of historically productive oyster bars.

Every year, tens of millions of hatchery-raised disease-free oysters produced at the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science Horn Point Lab are transported and planted on hundreds of acres of pre-selected and prepared oyster bars around the Bay. These bars are intensively monitored and managed to improve restoration success. Since 2000, the Maryland oyster partners have planted over 1 billion oysters on 60 large oyster bars, a majority of which are permanently protected or managed.

OYSTER 101

Did you know that oysters are critical to restoring the Bay’s waters? One mature oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day. In addition, oysters remove nitrogen and phosphorus pollutants, increase dissolved oxygen in the water, provide valuable habitat for fish, blue crabs and other bay creatures and also offer a high quality seafood product.

Did you know that a three-ounce portion of oysters provide about 1 gram of omega-3 fat, the daily amount recommended by the American Heart Association for people with coronary artery disease.

OUR PARTNERS

OYSTER ROUNDTABLE ACTION PLAN

In the summer of 1993, the state of Maryland convened the Oyster Roundtable, a coalition of 40 organizations, institutions, elected officials, businesses and individuals, to address the major concerns about how to bring oyster stocks in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay back to economically and ecologically healthy levels.  Two fo the outcomes was an oyster action plan and the creation of the Oyster Recovery Partnership.  Read the Plan
