January 17, 2009 :  1:00 P.M. - January 18, 2009 :  4:00 P.M.

Description:   Family Fun Weekend is the 3rd weekend of the month!  The Museum offers fun for the whole family with its differnet theme-based activities.  Visitors can make-and-take a craft and enjoy exciting scavenger hunts to discover artifacts and specimens throughout the museum!  January's theme is Happy 400th Birthday, Albany!  There will be no family fun weekend in February.  Please join us for New York in Bloom.

Description:   Take a trip around the state without leaving the 4th Floor of the Museum!  Research artifacts and learn about the regions of New York state.  Bring along your curiosity to uncover all the fun!  This program is free, ideal for children ages 5 through 12 - young siblings can tag along for fun, and pre-registration is required.  Call 518-473-7154 or e-mail psteinba@mail.nysed.gov.

Description:   Story Art is a program for toddlers and preschoolers.  Kids and caregivers are welcome to join us for storytelling, exploring exhibits, and touching objects from the museum collections.  Get creative with a fun project on February 6th, the theme is Whales.  Program begins at 11:00am in Kids Cove next to Discovery Place.  No registration required.

February 07, 2009 :  1:00 P.M. - 3:00 P.M.

Description:   Investigate the Invaders exhibit as a detective on a mystery hunt, or see if you can match a number if real invasive species with their pictures - not as easy as it sounds!  Find out what is being done and what we can do to slow down the invasion.  Program is designed for children, age 8 and up, is free of charge and no registration is required.

Excursion

February 07, 2009 :  10:00 A.M. - 11:30 A.M.

Description:   Mammals are abundant but sneaky; they cover every inch of the forest, but are almost never seen.  However, their tracks betray their presence and give evidence to their habitats.  Join Dr. Roland Kays, the curator of mammals at the Museum, and wildlife biologist Carl Herzog, of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, for a 1-mile hunt for clues about the mammals hiding and thriving in the Albany Pine Bush. 
This program takes place at the Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center and is free of charge. Pre-registration is required by January 28.  Limited to 25 participants.  Children must attend with an adult.  Call 518-473-7154 or e-mail psteinba@mail.nysed.gov.  THIS PROGRAM IS FULL - WAITING LIST ONLY.

let's go fly a kite!
March 14, 2009 :  1:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M.

Description:   Bring in windy March with kite making.  The kite will be a simple design and made with easy materials.  Decorate, cut, and assemble the kite, then learn some flying tips as we go outside on the Museum Terrace to fly our new creations.  Adults with children age 10 and older are welcome.

Description:   Michelle Stefanik, senior exhibition plenner, introduces the people living along Albany's waterfront at the turn of the 19th century and discusses their business ventures and homes, built on land salvaged from the banks of the Hudson River.  This program is for adults and children, is free of charge and no registration is required.

Description:   In celebration of the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth, cooking demonstrations in February will highlight the evolutionary history of the meals’ main ingredients. Each menu will focus on a different branch of the Tree of Life: vertebrates, invertebrates, plants, and fungi. Tonight, Chef Tony Destratis of Lake George Club uses fish, chicken, pork, beef, and other familiar and unfamiliar vertebrates to prepare a meaty meal unlike any other. Description:   In celebration of the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth, cooking demonstrations in February will highlight the evolutionary history of the meals’ main ingredients. Each menu will focus on a different branch of the Tree of Life: vertebrates, invertebrates, plants, and fungi.  Tonight, Chef David Britton from Saratoga’s Springwater Bistro tries to set a world record for the most diverse meal of invertebrates ever prepared. Dr. Jason Cryan, State Museum entomologist, helps steer the menu away from the creepy-crawlies eaten on extreme reality shows and toward the more appetizing branches of this part of the Tree of Life (think lobster!).  All Shows FREE in Clark Auditorium. This branch of the Tree of Life may give us the most diversity of foods, from wine to bread to mushrooms to corn smut.   Chef Paul Parker from Chez Sophie creates one of the most unusual meals of this series, promising a variety of tastes to match the diversity of Life. Description:   New York in Bloom has become one of Albany's most anticipated winter events.  This fund-raising weekend at the Museum benefits the Museum Club and the Discovery Squad, the winning after-school programs for children and teens. Friday, February 20, Adult fee is $5, children age 12 and under are free.  Saturday and Sunday, Adult fee is $6, children age 12 and under are free.
$6 entrance fee to the Museum on Saturday and Sunday includes admission to all New York in Bloom events and the 16th Annual James Campbell Memorial Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Show and Sale.  For information, call 518-474-5877. New York in Bloom presented by National Grid.  Major sponsor: KeyBank.

Description:   Vendors from throughout the Northeast display and sell gems, jewelry, minerals, lapidary equipment, fossils, and much more.  Meanwhile at the Museum, staff members conduct guided tours of the mineral and fossil exhibitions and are on hand to identify visitor's own minerals and fossils.  Afternoon lectures on the mineralogy of New York will be held.  Call 518-474-5877 for information about the times and locations.  Entrance fee is $6 for adults, children age 12 and under are free.

Time Tunnel Camp

Description:   During the winter school break, the Museum's highly acclaimed Time Tunnel day camp offers children in first through seventh grades entertaining education, hands-on enrichment, and enjoyable recreation.  Sessions meet weekdays from 9:00AM to 4:00PM.  There is a fee for this program and pre-registration is required.  For more information and registration, call 518-402-5019.
