Research Interests:

My research includes a systems approach to integrated pest management (IPM) that supports sustainable vegetable and fruit production in the upper midwest. Both basic and applied research is done to implement IPM programs for a variety of crops, including: sweet corn, cabbage, snap bean, cucurbits, and wine grapes. Current areas of interest include the long-term assessment of transgenic, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), corn for European corn borer management; development and validation of sequential sampling plans; integration of reduced-risk insecticides with native parasitic wasps for management of Lepidopteran pests; invasion biology and pest risk assessment; and the development of a risk-based framework for IPM.

Teaching Interests:

With my extension appointment, my primary teaching activity is focused toward growers, agricultural professionals, crop consultants, and vegetable processing company representatives. Our VegEdge site includes more information about the Vegetable IPM Program. I also participate in our graduate curricula by participating in the NSF-funded Graduate Program, Risk Analysis of Introduced Species and Genotypes. I also co-edit Radcliffe's World IPM Textbook. With over 67 chapters (English, Spanish), this site is an interactive resource for teaching IPM worldwide.
