Travel times for the ELME courses and directions to KBS

Classes for the first session begin Monday June 12. If you are participating in that first week of classes, plan on arriving at Kellogg Biological Station by at least that Sunday. There will be a welcome BBQ on Sunday, June 11 at 6:30 PM. The last day of ELME-related classes is Friday July 28. If you have been designated an ELME Scholar, plan on an additional week of research through August 4.

For those of you flying in, the preferred airport is the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek Airport (AZO), about 20 minutes away. The Gerald R. Ford Airport in Grand Rapids (GRR) is also a possibility if you find a substantially better flight. It is about 45 minutes away. Finally, Lansing Airport (LAN) is about 1.5 hours away. We can pick you up if you send us your flight information.

For those of you driving, directions and maps are available at our website. Free parking is available at Kellogg Biological Station.

Details for fellowship recipients

For those of you that have received an ELME fellowship that includes travel, you have a few options. You can either buy your own ticket and we will reimburse you up to the amount specified in your scholarship, or we can purchase the ticket for you. To get reimbursed, you will need a passenger ticket printed out from the airlines with the price and date of the flight. If you are traveling on an e-ticket, get a receipt printed from the airline. If you would like us to purchase the ticket, contact  Alice, the ELME secretary. We will reimburse driving miles, tolls, and meals up to the amount specified in your scholarship. Miles are reimbursed at $0.48 per mile. For tolls and meals while traveling, you will need receipts.

For those of you that have been awarded a personal stipend fellowship, the checks will be available for pick-up at Kellogg Biological Station. You will receive half the amount in a check on or shortly after July 1. You will receive the second half on or shortly after July 15. The amounts are classified as fellowships for tax purposes. No taxes will be removed, and you will get a 1098-T at the end of the year. Be aware that depending on your tax situation, you may be required to pay taxes related to this amount when filling.

Housing Arrangements

Students who have been awarded a housing scholarship will be assigned a dorm room with a small refrigerator, microwave, a shared bathroom, and a small desk.  Double-occupancy apartments include a small kitchen area, a bathroom, a front bedroom with two single beds, and aback bedroom with two single beds.  Many include a small chair and desk.

The ELME coordinator will make all housing arrangements with students assigned double occupancy rooms unless requested otherwise.  If you wish to stay longer than your involvement in ELME, please contact the ELME coordinator.

Daily Timeline for Courses

Here is a rough breakdown of the course times. The first three weeks are M-F, roughly 9 AM - 5 PM. It will be a mix of lectures and hands-on work. Saturday and Sunday should be free time. For the last four weeks, the course formally meets M, W, and F. The course does not formally meet Tuesday or Thursday, but there will be frequent mini-lectures and lab sessions on those days. The weekends are also free, but you may need to do some field work on the weekends depending on the nature of the project.

Free Time at KBS

In addition to the ELME program, there will be researchers at the station creating a vibrant community. Summers typically consist of weekly soccer games and Friday BBQ's. Kellogg Biological Station is on the North Country Trail, a trail that will eventually stretch from New York to North Dakota. The local chapter, Chief Noonday Chapter, has constructed a trail that connects Kellogg Biological Station with Fort Custer State Recreation Area. As a summer participant, you have free admission to the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, both an historically important bird sanctuary and a great place to do some birding. The apartments are located on Gull Lake in which one can go swimming, boating, or fishing. In addition, we may organize a trip to the sand dunes of Lake Michigan. If you are looking for a change of pace, the summer home of W.K. Kellogg, the founder of Kellogg's cereal is onsite, and the Gilmore Car Museum is only 6 miles up the road.

Cooking Facilities and Restaurants

On the weekend you will need to provide a few of your own meals.  Each dorm has a small refrigerator and a microwave.  There may be a range available in the common room.  For those arriving by airplane, we can stop by the grocery store.  About 1 mile down the road from KBS there is a great Breakfast/Lunch/Bakery shop that comes highly recommended (open Tue-Sat). In addition there is a small variety of good restaurants between 7 and 15 miles from the station.  On Friday evenings there is a pot-luck barbecue down by the lake.

Laundry Facilities

The apartment building has a common laundry room.  Washing machines and dryers cost $1.00 each.  Bring quarters and bring your own laundry detergent (or purchase some in Kalamazoo).

Email and computer access

Students registered as "Lifelong education" students will need to activate a MSU Net ID in order to use computers during the courses. You will need your PID and PAN that was sent to you when you registered in order to activate your MSU Net ID.  If you would like to bring your own computer, there is wireless access in many parts of the station along with Ethernet ports in the computer lab. However, there are no Ethernet ports in the apartments.

Library Access

The Librarian who manages our MSU branch library has agreed to use a paper check-out system that will enable ELME participants to check-out books from our library. A small collection books have been purchased for the ELME courses. These books will be placed on reserve in the library.

Mailing address during the course

Your mail address at KBS will be:

Your Name
ELME Program
W.K. Kellogg Biological Station
3700 East Gull Lake Drive
Hickory Corner, MI 49060

Note: the Kellogg Biological Station line is optional

You can send a package to that address before the program starts. Let us know when you send the package, and we'll be sure it gets placed in a secure location.

If you can get a pre-paid package set-up with FedEx, they come by about twice a week to pick-up packages. However, you can't arrange for payment at the station. In terms of sending packages from here, you could send a package with the U.S. Postal Service or with UPS in Richland. Richland is a nearby town, about 7 miles away.

Things to Bring With You

Lifelong education students, bring your PID and PAN.

  • Past students have found a USB flash drive useful.
  • Field clothes, i.e. clothes in which you are comfortable digging through dirt or walking through streams, fields, and bogs. Be prepared for both rain and sun.
  • Consider bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, and insect repellent.
  • Bring along any special biological equipment you may have, for example insect nets or binoculars.

The ELME program is supported by a grant from the A. W. Mellon Foundation and by the W. K. Kellogg Biological Station Summer School Program.  Send questions to ELMEprogram@kbs.msu.edu.
