Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts to Reopen (January 5, 2009) – The City of New Orleans is pleased to announce the grand re-opening of the Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts. Inaugurated in 1973, the theater was heavily damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The week of the re-opening will begin with a very special concert, the New Orleans All Star Revue. The show will feature a diverse offering of quintessential New Orleans performers, including Grammy winning songstress Irma Thomas, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Kermit Ruffins, Rebirth Brass Band, Marva Wright, Michael Ward, Phillip Manuel, Jeremy Davenport, Ingrid Lucia and Fredy Omar.

City Begins Repair of Lakeview Neighborhood Gravel Alleys (December 24, 2008) - The City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works announced another milestone in the restoration of roadways damaged as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Recently, the department began repairing 14 unpaved gravel alleys in Lakeview that were damaged by flooding and as a result of the removal of storm related debris.

MacArthur Boulevard to Undergo $14 Million in Roadway Repairs (December 18, 2008) – The City of New Orleans recently began reconstruction work on one mile of MacArthur Boulevard from Kabel Drive to Woodland Drive. The $14 million project includes the removal and replacement of concrete pavement, rehabilitation of sewer, water and drainage infrastructure, and removal and replacement of driveways and sidewalks.

City Celebrates the Completion of Rehabilitation Projects in Irish Channel and St. Mary Neighborhoods (December 16, 2008) – Recently, residents in District B began driving on safer, more viable streets as the rehabilitation of 1.75 miles of roadway throughout the Irish Channel and St. Mary neighborhoods was completed. The projects had a combined overall construction value of $1.4 million and included the removal of the top surface of pavement, repairs to the base where needed and overlaying of the roadway with new asphalt.

City Completes Five Accelerated Projects (October 31, 2008) – After accelerating the schedules of over 50 projects under $100,000, the City of New Orleans has completed five emerging projects at one fire station and four playgrounds. The New Orleans Fire Department Engine 08 (3300 Florida Ave) received new overhead doors. Milne Playground (2500 Filmore Ave), Harold Sampson Playground (3185 Louisa St) and Sam Bonart Playground (1200 Forstall St) all received new high mast field lighting, and Behrman Playground (2529 General Meyer Ave) received a new heating and boiler system.

City Completes Reconstruction of Papania Drive (October 31, 2008) – The City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works recently completed the reconstruction on Papania Drive from Chef Menteur Highway to the Dwyer Canal. The $3.9 million project, funded by the 2000 General Obligation Bonds, began in November 2007.

City of New Orleans Upgrades Recovery Web Site (October 29, 2008) – The City of New Orleans launched an updated and enhanced version of its Recovery Projects Information Web Site. The revamped site, which can be viewed at www.cityofno.com/recovery, will provide citizens with a one-stop shop for information regarding the City’s recovery and roadway projects. The original site was launched February 2008.

The City of New Orleans is undertaking an unprecedented level of capital improvement, street and landscape enhancement projects to rebuild New Orleans to pre-storm conditions, returning it to its status as one of the nation's most vibrant and thriving communities. Already, $1.1 billion has been allocated toward active recovery projects.
