WICHITA MOUNTIANS NWR HOSTS CONTROLLED ELK HUNT

Two controlled Elk hunts were conducted at the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. The annual event is a cooperative effort between the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) and the WMNWR.

The first hunt was held December 7-9, 2004. A total of 79 hunters had an overall success rate of 77%. The total count taken was 23 bulls and 38 cows. The second hunt was held December 14-16, 2004. A total of 81 hunters had an overall success rate of 78%. The total count taken was 23 cows and 40 bulls.

USDA/APHIS personnel collected samples from Rocky Mountain Elk to test for Chronic Wasting Disease.
