Signing On to the LexisNexis® Research Services |
Begin your research with the LexisNexis® Total Research System by completing the sign on form as described below and then clicking the Sign On button.
- LexisNexis or Custom ID
- Choose whether to:
- Sign on with your assigned LexisNexis ID. Your LexisNexis ID is usually the same ID you use to access traditional LexisNexis research.
- Create an easy-to-remember custom ID and password as described below, then sign on with those.
- Password
- If you entered your LexisNexis ID, enter your LexisNexis password. (If you are a law school student, please see below.) Your LexisNexis password is usually the same one you use to access traditional LexisNexis research.
- If you entered your custom ID above, enter the password you set up for your custom ID.
- Law school students
- If you entered your educational identification number in the LexisNexis ID field, no password is required. Signing on with a custom ID does require the accompanying password that you set up.
Please remember that access to the LexisNexis research services with the educational identification number provided to you is limited to research directly connected to educational activities. Any other use of this identification number is in violation of the Terms & Conditions of use specified in the Law School Subscription Agreement and is therefore strictly forbidden. Any unauthorized use will result in the immediate revocation of all privileges associated with this identification number as well as notification of the appropriate law school dean and possible legal action. Unauthorized use includes, but is not limited to, use of the educational identification number to perform research for any commercial venture or pecuniary benefit.
- Client (not available to all users)
- If your firm requires that you specify a client or project information for your session with the LexisNexis Total Research System, the Client field appears. Enter the name of the client for which you will be performing research, or the code associated with a project. This name or code is used for identification and billing purposes.
- Client/Project Information Format
- (Available only if your firm requires client or project identification in a specific format.)
The appearance of the Client field on your sign on form indicates that your firm requires client or project specification for your research session.
The appearance of a specific identification format beneath the Client field indicates that you must enter a client name or project code in that particular format. The information you enter in the Client field must match the displayed format character for character.
The list below explains the characters used in the identification format.
- N = A numeric digit between and including 0–9
- X = An alphanumeric character between and including 0–9 and A–Z
- A = A character between and including A–Z
- B = A blank space
For example, if the displayed format is XXXBNN-NN, you would enter a 9-character identifier consisting of 3 alphanumeric characters, followed by a blank, 2 numeric characters, a hyphen, and 2 more numeric characters.
Any positions remaining after the displayed format are for your optional use.
- Sign On
- Click this button to sign on to the LexisNexis Total Research System using the ID, password, and options you specified.
- Security Verification Field
- The LexisNexis® Total Research System now uses a security verification field. You'll see this field if you have unsuccessfully attempted to sign on to the LexisNexis Total Research System multiple times. This increases the security of our network and protects your identification number from being compromised by computer programs attempting to discover IDs and passwords. The field can be easily read by humans, but not by automated computer programs.
To continue with your sign-on, enter the numbers you see in the security verification field. Do not use spaces.
If no numeric image appears, please make sure that your browser is set to display images and try again. If you can't read the numbers, refresh your browser - a new number will appear that may be easier to read.
- Forgot Your Password?
- If you would like an email reminder of the password you previously selected for custom ID, click the "Forgot Your Password?" link and follow the instructions.
Note: If you have saved your sign-on information in the past or are currently signed on to the LexisNexis Total Research System, you will need to sign off completely and unsave your sign-on information to see this link.
- Change My Password?
- If you would like to change the password you previously selected for custom ID, click the "Change My Password" link and follow the instructions.
Note: If you have saved your sign-on information in the past or are currently signed on to the LexisNexis Total Research System, you will need to sign off completely and unsave your sign-on information to see this link.
- Remember My Sign On Information
- Check this box if you prefer not to type your ID and password each time you enter the LexisNexis research services. You'll need to re-save your sign-on information:
- If you use more than one browser
- If you sign on from more than one network (for example, if you take your laptop to another location, such as home or an internet café).
Note:
- If you check this box, remember that you will not see the links to the "Create a custom ID", "Custom ID Manager", "Forgot your password?" features until you sign off and un-save this information.
- If you use more than one browser, remember to save your sign-on information on each one.
- This function is not recommended for use on public workstations. All research performed at a workstation will be assigned to the ID in use when "Remember my Sign On information" was checked, and that ID will accrue charges accordingly.
To turn off the "Remember my Sign On information" option, sign off the LexisNexis Total Research System and click the "Un-save my Sign On information" link on the screen that appears.
- Use a Secure Connection
- Your LexisNexis sign-on information is always sent over a secure connection using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). However, if you click the "Use a secure connection" link, your entire session is transmitted using a secure connection. SSL is the standard encryption protocol used to provide a secure connection. With SSL in place, information is encrypted before it is transmitted between your computer and LexisNexis, blocking any attempt to observe this information by another party.
- SSL encryption may result in slightly slower system performance over a dial-up connection.
- To turn off the secure connection, click the "Sign Off" link at the top of any LexisNexis Total Research System page, then sign back on, leaving the "Use a secure connection" box unchecked. Or, click Preferences at the top of the screen and uncheck the "Use a secure connection" option on the screen that appears.
- Create a Custom ID
- Click this link and follow the instructions to create a custom ID and password.
Note: If you have saved your sign-on information in the past or are currently signed on to the LexisNexis Total Research System, you will need to sign off completely and unsave your sign-on information to see this link.
- Custom ID Manager

- Changing a custom ID, a password for custom ID, your email address for custom ID, or your security question and answer.
- Managing multiple LexisNexis IDs with one custom ID, including adding IDs to your custom ID, selecting one as a default, and creating LexisNexis ID descriptions.

For more information, click Using Custom ID Manager.
Note: If you have saved your sign-on information in the past or are currently signed on to the LexisNexis Total Research System, you will need to sign off completely and unsave your sign-on information to see this link.
- Message to law school Custom ID users
- The message to law school Custom ID users changes seasonally to provide quick access to Custom ID tasks that law school students may want to perform (such as associating the LexisNexis ID you received for a summer position with your existing Custom ID, or changing back to your school ID at the end of the summer). For more information, click Manage multiple LexisNexis IDs with one Custom ID.
- Bypass the Sign On Page
- If you prefer to bypass the home page where you sign on to the Lexis service or the Nexis service, follow these steps:
- Enter your ID and password as described above.
- Check the "Remember My Sign On Information" checkbox, then click Sign On.
Note: If you check this box, remember that you will not see the links to the "Create a custom ID", "Custom ID Manager", "Forgot your password?" features until you sign off and un-save this information.
