Deadline Nears for Applying for Disaster Assistance

San Francisco, CA -- Big Island residents and businesses affected by November's severe storms and flooding have only until January 8, 2001, to register for disaster assistance. Announcement of the deadline was made today by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State Civil Defense.
"The holiday season is the busiest time of the year, but before we know it that January 8th deadline will be here," said federal coordinating officer William L. Carwile III. "So we urge people who suffered damages or losses to not delay about registering."
Disaster victims may still register for various types of local, state and federal help by calling FEMA, toll-free, 1-800-462-9029 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday (closed Christmas and New Year's Day). Those with hearing or speech difficulties can call TTY 1-800-462-7585.
The kinds of help available include temporary housing assistance, grants for serious needs and necessary expenses, and low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration for damaged residential and business property. Disaster unemployment, tax and other special help and services are also available to eligible persons.
