Magellan Tank Fire Response in Kansas City, Kansas
At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2008, lightning struck on or near a petroleum tank at the Magellan Midstream Partners distribution terminal, 401 E. Donovan Road, in Kansas City, Kansas. The tank, containing approximately 1.2 million gallons of unleaded gasoline, caught fire, sending a large plume of smoke across portions of the greater Kansas City metro area. EPA Region 7 emergency responders were dispatched to the scene within 15 minutes, and began screening air samples in the area for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter. Since the initial response, EPA Region 7 has continued to monitor air quality data gathered from approximately 60 sites along or near the plume. Some of the sites are maintained by non-EPA entities, including Magellan contractors and local government entities.
Below is a link to air sample results collected by Magellan Midstream Partners on June 4, 2008, that were reviewed by EPA and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). The air was tested for volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), including benzene, toluene and xylene, along with carbon monoxide and PM10 (particulate matter that is 10 microns or less in size). The air concentrations of these fire-related contaminants were below levels of health concern.
Also below is a link to a health consultation with ATSDR that summarizes the air monitoring data collected by EPA Region 7 and Magellan on June 3 and 4, 2008. Field data were collected to screen for particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, and benzene. (See No. 5 in narrative summary for conclusions.)
