About Us
Superfund is EPA's program to identify, investigate and clean up
uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites throughout the United
States. The program was established in 1980 when Congress passed the
Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act
(CERCLA) and the Superfund
Amendments
& Reauthorization Act (SARA), better known as Superfund. Our Federal Facilities Branch also monitors
and provides assistance to federal facilities in Region 4 to ensure compliance
with environmental regulations and policies under the Comprehensive
Environmental Response, Compensation Liability Act (CERCLA).
With the support of our states, tribes and communities, the Superfund program in Region 4 has identified more than 7,000 hazardous waste sites. Of these, 239 sites have been placed on the National Priorities List and have been or are being cleaned up under EPA's authority.
Superfund is also home to EPA Region 4's Emergency Response and Removal activities under Superfund law, the Clean Air Act Risk Management Plan Regulations, and the Clean Water Act as amended by the 1990 Oil Pollution Act.

To contact a Region 4 Duty Officer for oil or chemical spills in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Tennessee, please call (404) 562-8705. Both of these phone numbers are staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays.
