Traumatic InjuryActivities: NIOSH Funded Research GrantsNIOSH sponsors research and training through its extramural programs, which complement the Institute's intramural programs. More information is available from the NIOSH Office of Extramural Programs. Our Research Portfolio includes the following NIOSH funded research grants: Selected Current Extramural Traumatic Injury Research GrantsEvaluation of Workplace Violence Prevention InterventionThe purpose of this research is to conduct a comprehensive assessment of risk factors for violence and occurrences of violence in a sample of social service workplaces and to develop and implement a comprehensive violence prevention program in these workplaces. This study will evaluate risk factors and the effectiveness of violence prevention programs in such small, high demand workplaces. The support of labor and management in this research adds to the likelihood of widely applicable findings. This study is the first effort to evaluate the impact of violence prevention programs in a social services setting. Project contact: Jane A. Lipscomb Risk Factors and Controls for Falls from HeightsThree projects are planned that will use laboratory experiments and biomechanical modeling to investigate and mitigate the effects of localized muscle fatigue on balance control. First, experiments will be conducted to examine and quantify the effects of localized muscle fatigue on balance control and the ability to recover from a balance perturbation. Second, a biomechanical model will be developed to quantify balance control strategies in terms of joint torques and to predict the effects of localized fatigue on these parameters. Third, the effectiveness of two interventions aimed at reducing the adverse effects of fatigue on balance control will be determined. Project contact: Maury A. Nussbaum Violence Against Teachers: Etiology and ConsequencesThe purpose of this study is to determine the rates and consequences of physical assault and nonphysical violence among licensed teachers in Minnesota. This study will examine not only the prevalence and outcomes of workplace violence experiences but also organizational, environmental, and individual factors that influence violent assaults against teachers. Project contact: Susan G. Gerberich Risk Factors for Lacerations in MeatpackingThis study focuses on investigating fixed and transient factors related to the risk for upper extremity laceration injuries in meatpacking workers. Existing data suggest high rates of upper extremity trauma in meatpacking workers, although little empirical data are available on risk and causal factors. Project contact: Melissa J. Perry Intervention Effectiveness in Finnish AgricultureThe specific aim of this project is to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of promising intervention strategies in study populations of agricultural workers in Finland.
