| A New Look at Understanding Hazard Assessment Methodologies
Because of tremendous variability in fuels, weather, topography, codes and standards, and state and local laws and ordinances, there is no single rating system that can adequately assess and provide the mitigation strategies for all of the WUI areas in the United States. Therefore, each homeowner, subdivision, community, city or county is encouraged first to adopt a standard assessment approach that will result in specific mitigation recommendations for residents and then to develop, modify or use a rating system, if desired, that will meet their specific needs. This revised guide will assist the users by encouraging the evaluating existing interface areas before beginning mitigation efforts, validating existing hazard rating systems, providing a planning tool for future development, or in bridging the gap.
This 2nd edition provides concepts, considerations, and a resource of methodologies and tools that may be used to assess the threat in WUI areas and will be useful to fire and emergency service personnel, planners, developers, local officials and others involved or interested in the threat wildfires pose to WUI areas.

| Life Safety Evacuation DVD Set
FWC-700-07
Is evacuation always the safest means to protect lives in a wildfire? If not, what kind of situations might warrant not evacuating? Are there alternatives to evacuation?
Many fire and emergency authorities believe that evacuation is the only viable measure to protect people in the event of a raging wildfire, but there are alternatives to total evacuation. The information on this DVD set will challenge all to visualize safer communities of the future and consider improvements and recommendations to improve a safer future of living in today's interface communities.
The DVDs provides initial material to start discussions among residents and local authorities to explore alternatives and other appropriate responses to protect residents in the path of a wildfire. The DVDs include an abbreviated discussion-starter video, excerpts of a panel discussion held at the 2006 Firewise Communities Backyards & Beyond Conference along with the full 2 hour presentation and background materials that can be viewed and printed from your computer. | 15510 | | 1 |
