Endangered Species

DEC's Endangered Species Program is designed to find and correct fish or wildlife problems before certain species are gone forever.

State Wildlife Grants

In Fall 2001, federal legislation established a new State Wildlife Grants (SWG) program that provided funds to state wildlife agencies for conservation of fish and wildlife species in greatest need of conservation.

New York Natural Heritage Program

The New York Natural Heritage Program facilitates conservation of New York's rare animals, rare plants, and significant ecosystems.

Natural Heritage Areas Program

The Natural Heritage Area Program (NHA) recognizes rare animals, rare plants, and significant natural communities, and provides greater assurance that management activities on designated state lands protect those unique resources for which the area was designated.

Adirondack Cooperative Loon Program

The Adirondack Cooperative Loon Program (ACLP) was initiated in the spring of 2001 to research the natural history of Common Loons (Gavia immer) and the effects of contaminants and human interactions on loon populations in the Adirondack Park.

  • Environmental Resource Mapper - The Environmental Resource Mapper is an interactive mapping application that can be used to identify some of New York State's natural resources and environmental features that are state protected, or of conservation concern.
  • Habitat Protection Programs - The Habitat Protection Section is made up of biologist who assess and mitigate the adverse impacts of electrical generation (steam-electric, hydropower, wind power)and hazardous waste sites on fish and wildlife resources in New York State.
  • New York Natural Heritage Program - The New York Natural Heritage Program enables and enhances conservation of rare animals, rare plants, and significant natural communities or ecosystems (which are basically different types of forests, wetlands, grasslands, etc.).
  • Natural Heritage Areas Program - The goal of the New York Natural Areas Program is to provide state land managers with a tool to highlight and ensure the protection of rare plants, animals and significant natural communities on state-owned land.
