Md. Delegation Asks For Delay In LNG Vote

BALTIMORE (AP) ―

Maryland's congressional delegation is calling for the federal government to delay a final decision on a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal near Baltimore.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is expected to vote Thursday on whether to approve the proposed terminal. AES Corp. wants to build it at the old Bethlehem Steel shipyard at Sparrows Point. The company would also build a pipeline to pump the gas to Pennsylvania.

The Maryland delegation wrote a letter to FERC on Tuesday asking it to delay a vote until after President-elect Barack Obama takes office next week. Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger says an LNG facility at Sparrows Point would pose a security risk and threaten endangered Chesapeake Bay species.

Some area labor groups support the plant, saying it would create much-needed jobs.
