Computer Facilities

KBS Computer Services is staffed by a full-time systems analyst and part-time personnel.  The KBS network at all locations has 130 computers, plus about 50 other networked peripherals and devices.  Network servers host file services, SAS statistical software, network printer services, web servers, an e-mail server, and disk backup services.  Two computer workrooms house 9 and 4 common-use computers respectively, and the three graduate student offices each have a computer work area with two networked PC's and a printer, as does the library.  Other common-use facilities include a graphics workroom with film recorder, color printer, and scanning devices.

A T-1 connection provides access to the Michnet backbone network, funded by a recent 5-yr program of improvements to computer and network facilities, which also included upgrading most of the wired network to gigabit ethernet, multimedia classroom facilities, graphics workroom equipment, network servers, and the installation of fiber optic cable and radio bridges to connect other parts of KBS to the network including the Pond Lab and LTER Site.

A GIS workroom, staffed part-time, provides researchers access to maps and other geo-referenced data at KBS. ArcView is available on library workstations.

Visiting scientists including graduate students have access to computers and the internet at a number of KBS locations, including the computer workrooms, graduate student offices, and KBS library.
