G. H. Lauff Scholarship and Awards

Several different undergraduate and graduate fellowships and scholarships have been established specifically for students who wish to study at the W. K. Kellogg Biological Station at Michigan State University. 

Students with outstanding scholastic achievement that will contribute to research and education in ecology and evolution will be given highest priority for these awards. 

The Selection Committee will consider only merit, not need, in making these awards.  Awards will be made on the basis of partial tuition and fees. Students interested in pursuing research or other awards listed herein should contact Dr. Katherine Gross.

    Students must have completed at least 28 semester credits (or the equivalent) of college level work by Spring Semester, 2007.

    George H. Lauff Research Scholar

    Eligibility:  The purpose of this award is to recruit students to utilize KBS as a research site.  Applicants are limited to upper-division undergraduates and beginning graduate students (with less than 20 graduate credit hours) who intend to conduct research program at KBS. More advanced graduate students should apply for a Research Award to initiate or support ongoing research at KBS. 

    Recipients of Research Scholar Awards must be in residence at KBS in the summer term and are expected to enroll for research credits (thesis, dissertation, or special problems), and the Current Topics in Ecological Research course (ZOL 891).

    Criteria:   Individuals who are interested in initiating research at KBS and are expected to contribute substantially to the research and educational environment at KBS.  Evaluation is based solely on merit.

    Requirements: All applicants must:

      • complete the Application for Scholarships and Awards form
      • include a statement of proposed research (one page)
      • identify a KBS faculty member as a resident research advisor who will provide oversight of the project and provide access to needed facilities and resources
      • submit letter(s) of recommendation
        • KBS graduate students need only one letter of recommendation (from their resident faculty advisor).
        • Undergraduates and non-KBS graduate students need two letters of recommendation, one of which should be from the KBS research advisor.
      • graduate students applying for this award should include
        • a graduate course plan
      • Applicants must be a currently enrolled MSU student, OR plan to enroll for at least one MSU credit during the Award period

    A final report in the form of a letter should be sent to the Director's office summarizing research activities and likelihood of continuing activities at KBS by October 1 of the year of the award.

    • Award: Tuition awards of up to 6 credits determined solely on the basis of merit.

    George H. Lauff Tuition Awards

    Eligibility:  Open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolling for at least one course at KBS.  Priority will be given to students who are planning on pursuing graduate work in ecology or evolution, careers in conservation, or science teaching. 

    Recipients are strongly encouraged to be in residence at KBS for the terms they are enrolled.

    Requirements: All Applicants must:

    Award: Tuition awards of up to 6 credits determined solely on the basis of merit.

    George H. Lauff Research Awards

    Eligibility:  Open to graduate students who wish to initiate research at KBS.  Students may reapply for this award.

    Requirements: Applicants must submit:

    • a completed Application for Scholarships and Awards form
    • a 3 page research proposal following a specified format, indicating how this work will contribute to their research development
    • a brief resume or curriculum vitae
    • letter(s) of recommendation
      • KBS graduate students need only one letter of recommendation (from their resident faculty advisor)
      • non-KBS graduate students need two letters of recommendation, one of which should be from a KBS-based research advisor.

    A final report in the form of a letter should be sent to the Director's office summarizing research activities and likelihood of continuing activities at KBS by October 1 of the year of the award.

    Award: A maximum of $500 for travel to field sites, supplies, and equipment.
