Annual Performance Measures

Who We Are:

The Office of Multicultural Health plays a strong leadership role in helping the Oregon Public Health Division focus attention on communities of color, Indian tribal governments, and other multicultural groups.

Why We're Here:

To improve the health status of under-served and under-represented populations in Oregon through multicultural and culturally-competent approaches that influence the way in which health services are designed and delivered.

The Difference We're Making:
  • Public Health Division programs are calling upon the Office of Multicultural Health for resources, training, assessments, and technical assistance. The HIV/AIDS Community Mobilization Project is underway through a three-year State & Territorial Minority HIV/AIDS Demonstration Grant.
  • The Office of Multicultural Health is linking with county health departments, community-based coalitions and other organizations to provide technical assistance and to work as partners with them.
  • The Office of Multicultural Health supports the efforts of the Racial & Ethnic Health Task Force appointed by Governor Kitzhaber in 1999.
  • The Office of Multicultural Health provides information and networking between State Agency programs and community organizations, service providers, and policy makers. Some resources include the Multicultural Health Electronic Newsletter and the statewide Diversity Events Calendar.

Multicultural Health Initiatives

The Oregon Health Interpreter Council was created in Oregon statute 409.515-625 to assist the Department to establish standards relating to health care interpreters for persons with limited English proficiency. The Council will develop education and qualification standards, as well as explore certification and testing of these individuals.
  • The mission of the Ad Hoc Committee on Migrant & Seasonal Farmworker Health is to provide an on-going forum for the broad spectrum of agencies, organizations and parities interested in migrant & seasonal farmworker health issues, in order to exchange information; research areas of interest; and identify emerging issues, concerns and solutions and to bring them to the attention of appropriate agencies and policy makers.
  • The Benson High School Health Occupations Partnership is a cooperative venture between the Benson High School Health Occupations Program and the Multnomah County Health Department, the Oregon Health & Science University, and the Oregon Department of Human Services, Public Health Division.
  • The State of Oregon PROMISE program is an internship program designed to provide professional, managerial and technical paid work experience in state and local government agencies. The program's purpose is to increase participation of students of color in internship opportunities and future job openings in the public sector.
  • The Governor's Racial and Ethnic Health Task Force has been hard at work in helping to eliminate health disparities within Oregon's communities of color.
  • With a grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety Division, the Office of Multicultural Health researched transportation safety issues, specifically vehicular deaths for Hispanics ages 1-44. Three resource documents were published: Transporation Safety Resource Documents.
