Local foods are grown locally, enjoyed locally and have many benefits to the area economy. While there is no standard definition of local foods, there is a growing desire by consumers to know the “face of the farmer.” This year, the ND Department of Agriculture set a local foods goal to provide education and technical assistance to any community in North Dakota seriously desiring to initiate a local foods project. Our vision is to create a food system in North Dakota that is abundant in locally produced foods to foster the betterment of our health, economic well being and the self reliance of our citizens. More information and useful tools for communities can be found by viewing our Local Foods Information page. The reasons to buy local are plentiful. These were presented at four regional meetings held in October of 2008. See what the Department of Agriculture, along with their Supporting Partners can do to assist your community with a local foods initiative can be found here.
