History of New England Wild Flower Society

last modified December 05, 2008

A brief look at development of New England Wild Flower Society

New England Wild Flower Society is a 107-year-old success story! We are recognized nationally as one of the nation's leading plant conservation organizations.

The founders of New England Wild Flower Society had a compelling vision — a plant conservation society that would protect our native flora. At the beginning of our second century, we are very grateful for the stewardship of our predecessors and we acknowledge their many accomplishments. Because of the New England Wild Flower Society, the native plants of New England are better protected and more appreciated than ever before.

Mission statement

Our mission is to promote the conservation of temperate North American flora through education, research, horticulture, habitat preservation, and advocacy. Our vision is a future where vigorous native plant populations live in healthy, balanced, natural ecosystems—protected, enjoyed, and beneficial to all life.

Over the past decade, the Society has prepared itself for the plant conservation, habitat protection, and environmental leadership challenges of the 21st century. If industrialization, development, and pollution have severely challenged plant and habitat conservation in our first century, the next century will be even more demanding. As we enter our second century, we seek to sustain and expand the conservation gains so well begun in our first 100 years.
