DECEMBER

13      Winter Birds and Holiday Treats

1pm, Family Program
Fee: Members $3/adults, $1/children
Non-members $5/adults, $3/children

It's the holiday season and the time to give to those in need. One group you can help is the birds who are visiting your yard during the cold winter months. During this family program. we will help you identify the different birds visiting your yard during the winter. We will also spend time making some holiday treats for you to take home and give to the birds in your yard.

 


JANUARY

17      Tricky Tracks

1pm, Family Program

It's Winter! Let's get outside and see who else is out and about! Join us as we explore the Sanctuary grounds to find out what critters are around, where they are going, how fast and whether they were alone. During this family program the Sanctuary staff will help you identify tracks and other clues left behind by the animals that spend their winter here at the Sanctuary. You will also get an opportunity to make a "track identifier" for you to take home.


FEBRUARY

6-8      Workshop: Carve and Paint a Drake Ringneck Decoy
           Instructor: Willy McDonald

9am - 5 pm each day
Fee: $250 per Student ($100 deposit required to reserve your spot) Fee includes cutout, pattern, glass eyes). Fee also includes lunch, beverages and snacks for all three days

Award-winning carver Willy McDonald is teaching this workshop on decoy carving at the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary. Students will carve and paint a true hunting decoy from cork and basswood. The class will include all aspects of a hunting decoy, including: texturing, painting, keel making, weighting, and repair. Methods learned in this class can be used to make hunting decoys, decorative & smoothies for competition, or natural finish decoys. Decorative carvers would also benefit from this class, as proper anatomy interpretation will be taught.

The course is designed for the beginning student, but carvers of all skill levels are welcome. Students will provide all tools and paints for the project. Tools and paint supplies will be available for sale during class.

10     Owl Prowl

7-8:30 pm, Family Program

Winter time is a good time to take a night hike and listen for owls. Join the Sanctuary staff as we talk about the different kinds of owls that live in Michigan and how to identify them by sight and sound. Afterwards, we will go on a hike in the Sanctuary to listen for owls. Dress appropriately for the weather and no flashlights please.

12-15  Great Backyard Bird Count

9-11 am each day
Fee:free for members; non-members pay general admission

Count for fun, Count for the future! This year is the 12th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). Help us at the sanctuary participate. Join us for a bird walk to survey and count the birds at the Sanctuary. During the walk, we will talk about the Great Backyard Bird Count and show you how you can become involved and submit the observations you make at your house or yard. Dress appropriately for the weather. If you have binoculars, bring them; otherwise, you can borrow a pair from the Sanctuary.


MARCH

14  Bluebirds and Build-a-Box

1-2:30 pm, Family program
Fee: Members $3/adults, $1/children
Non-members $5/adults, $3/children

The nest box and feeder-building experts, Bill and Pat Stovall from Delton, MI, return once again to teach us about nest boxes, bluebirds & the other birds who use boxes. The Stovalls will talk about the different styles of nest boxes, where and how to mount the boxes, and how to identify the different birds that you may find in your box. A short video on bluebirds and nest box monitoring will also be shown. After the program, attendees will have an opportunity to build a nest box. All tools to assemble the nest boxes are provided, and Stovall brand nest box kits can be purchased from the Sanctuary for $15.50.

Who is that soaring above? Is it a hawk? Is it an eagle? Is it a vulture? Why do birds soar and what kinds of birds soar? Join us as we learn about the different kinds of soaring birds and which of these birds you might find flying in the skies of Southwest Michigan. We will learn why and how birds soar. At the end, you will get an opportunity to make your own soaring bird.
