The Chinese flame tree (Koelreuteria bipinnata), a native of Asia, produces bright red fruiting pods with small, yellow flowers.

Barbara Collins, Ph.D., is a professor of biology at California Lutheran University. She teaches General Biology for the majors, Microbiology, Environmental Ecology, California Plant Communities, Flora of Southern California, and Wildflowers of the Sierras.
