A Rare San Diego Vernal Pool Wildflower: The Mesa Mint
Mesa mint (Pogogyne abramsii), a rare and endangered wildflower endemic to vernal pools of San Diego County, California. Like other members of the mint family (Lamiaceae) it is an aromatic herb with a pleasant "minty" aroma. The flowering stem in photo is surrounded by another diminutive vernal pool plant called toad rush (white arrow). Toad rush (Juncus bufonius) is a member of the rush family (Juncaceae). |
