Assessment of Student Learning: Liberal Education Learning Portfolios

The college years go by faster than any first-year student would imagine, and the Liberal Education Learning Portfolio provides an opportunity to exhibit personal and professional growth, as well as to record how the student meets Colby-Sawyer's learning outcomes. Student portfolios include reflections on a range of experiences across the major, the Liberal Education Program, and the college.

Portfolio Elements

As well as offering the basis for personal reflections on students' progress in meeting the outcomes of the college, the Liberal Education Learning Portfolio provides the college with one way to assess the effectiveness of our liberal education program. Students have the primary responsibility for the portfolio.

By the time students are in their final semester, they have collected materials and written reflections that demonstrate how they have met the college learning outcomes. Students enter materials from five selected courses and their major acceptance essay into their e-portfolio.

In addition to materials from five selected courses and their major acceptance essay, students may also add elements to their portfolio such as a list of co-curricular activities, a resume, an internship summary and a video clip of a performance.
