Funding Opportunities Schedule FAQs

I&I provides grants to individuals and small businesses for promising energy-saving concepts and technologies. Technologies that offer significant energy savings and future commercial market potential are eligible for I&I support.

At present, I&I has no funding for its activities in fiscal year 2008, so it has announced no upcoming funding opportunity solicitations. I&I accepts proposals only during open solicitations. Please continue to visit the I&I website to check for information about any upcoming solicitations.

See "Apply for Grant Funding" below for details on the funding process.

Apply for Grant Funding

Steps to receive funding. Register to be notified about upcoming I&I announcements of funding oppurtunities. Check the I&I web site regularly to find out when announcements will be released. Download the announcement. Develop a proposal. Register with DOE's Industry Procurement System(IIPS). Submit a complete proposal on time through IIPS. Proposals will be graded and selected.

Before applying for an I&I grant, inventors or small businesses should first determine if the technology is applicable for I&I funding. The Pre-Application Self-Assessment Tool is a series of questions that will help the inventors determine whether their technology is applicable for funding through I&I's competitive process.

To receive funding through an I&I grant, inventors and small businesses MUST respond to an I&I announcement of funding opportunity when it is released. An announcement of funding opportunity is a request for proposals, and I&I releases an announcement once or twice every year. Once an announcement is released, applicants can register with the Interactive Procurement System (IIPS) and then submit a proposal. Only proposals responding to an open announcement will be accepted by I&I. The announcement is competitive, meaning that only the strongest proposals are selected to receive funding and technical support. To find out when announcements are released, inventors can do the following:

  1. Register with DOE. CLICK HERE to register.
  2. Subscribe to a federal grant Web site.
    GRANTS.GOV: www.grants.gov/
  3. Check the I&I Web site for updates: Inventions

To receive e-mail notification of upcoming I&I funding opportunities, subscribe to the Federal Grants Notification Service. Enter your e-mail address, then select Energy as the Category of Funding Activity. Enter 81.036 as the CFDA Number for Inventions and Innovation. Next, select Department of Energy as the Agency. Finally, click Subscribe to Mailing List. Disclaimer: This service is provided for convenience only and does not serve as a guarantee of notification.

These Web sites will provide a link to the announcement once it has been released or opened to the public for response. Note that all proposals are submitted electronically through DOE's Industry Interactive Procurement System (IIPS). There are no other forms outside of IIPS. To submit a proposal, inventors must first register with IIPS. Step-by-step instructions for registering with IIPS are available at http://e-center.doe.gov/.

Once registered, users will receive a username and password that will provide access to the system and the ability to submit a proposal via the IIPS Web site. A helpful guide for the IIPS system can be found at Quick Guide for I&I IIPS Users (MS Word 137 KB). For full instructions on using the system, please see the "User Guide" on the IIPS Homepage under "Help." Only registered users will have the capability to transmit their proposal applications. Applicants are strongly encouraged to register with IIPS as soon as possible prior to the application deadline. Once prospective applicants are registered, only DOE personnel and expert evaluators will have access to application information. All information within submitted proposals will be kept in the strictest confidence.
