My Colby-Sawyer Experience

Every student at Colby-Sawyer experiences a wide variety of courses, regardless of their major. This is accomplished in part through Pathways, which is the foundation of Colby-Sawyer's Liberal Education Program. The goal of Pathways is to ensure that students develop skills in a range of fields, in addition to their primary area of study.

Pathways consist of the following

  1. First Year Seminar: A graded 3-credit course, which is theme-based and interdisciplinary (see examples below).
  2. Stepping Stones courses: Three required courses (chosen from 5-10 options), which provide content important for development of background knowledge in the Pathway topic.
  3. Sophomore Seminar: This course reunites the original Pathway faculty member and students to discuss an in-depth understanding of the Pathway theme.

Examples of Seminar topics

  • Inequality: Historic and Contemporary Views

  • Exploration: From Dream to Discovery

  • Art in the Landscape/Landscape as Art

  • Time: Past, Present and Future

  • Betwixt and Between: An Introduction to College Honors

  • Since September 11th

  • Hostile Lands and Wild Beasts: Nature and the Human Experience

  • Art and Science of Secret Communication
