NIDDK Advisory Council Gains Nine

February 12, 1997

Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala has appointed new members to the Advisory Council of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), the Institute announced today. NIDDK is a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the major Federal funder of U.S. biomedical research.

The new members are: Judith Bond, Ph.D., of Pennsylvania State University; Ruby Haughton, B.S., of U.S. Bancorp; S. Robert Levine, M.D., of the Health Corporation; Jerrold Olefsky*, M.D., of the Veterans Administration; James Rothman, Ph.D., of the Sloan-Kettering Institute; Barbara Hayes, Ph.D., from Texas Southern University; Eric Neilson, M.D., of the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia; George Stamatoyannopoulos, M.D., Dr.Sci, of the University of Washington at Seattle; and David Harlan*, M.D., MC, USN, of the Naval Medical Research Institute.

"These individuals will play a key role in steering NIDDK research into the next millennium," predicted Dr. Phillip Gorden, NIDDK Director.

Most NIH funding goes to scientists in medical schools, universities, and other research institutions across the country who propose biomedical research projects to the NIH. To ensure high scientific standards, all proposals are reviewed by an initial review group and the National Advisory Council.

The initial review group comprises scientists from universities and medical schools in the proposed research field who score applications based on scientific merit and feasibility. The National Advisory Council comprises members from both the scientific and lay communities who have an interest in NIDDK research and reviews applications for relevance to the NIDDK mission.

The Council, which is divided into three subcouncils, reviews grants in diabetes, endocrine and metabolic diseases; kidney, urologic and hematologic diseases; and digestive diseases and nutrition.

Gorden says the Council creates bridges with voluntary organizations and health professional groups and influences the fate of new investigators. There are now 17 appointed and 6 ex officio members to help build research priorities, conduct second-level peer review of grant applications, and create an open line of communication between the research community and the NIDDK.

He received his M.D. degree from the University of Illinois, and his research focuses on the induction and mediation of GLUT4 translocation.

  • James Rothman, Ph.D., is Vice Chairman of the Sloan-Kettering Institute and Chairman of the Cellular Biochemistry and Biophysics Program at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York. He received his Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from Harvard. Dr. Rothman recently received the 1996 Gairdner Foundation International Award for his work on protein transport and secretion and the 1996 King Faisal International Prize.

  • David Harlan*, M.D., MC, USN, is Director of the Immune Cell Biology Program at the Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda. He received his M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine. His research is on insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and immune mechanisms.

The Kidney, Urologic and Hematologic Diseases subcouncil welcomes:

  • Barbara Hayes, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, Texas Southern University Graduate School, Houston, Texas. She is also Program Director, Research Centers in Minority Institutions at the Center for the Study of Ethnic Diseases. Her research centers on the causes and effects of diabetic nephropathy.
