Atlanta Kidney Disease Education Campaign Launch
| Who: | The new Atlanta Coalition of the National Kidney Disease Education Program (NKDEP), set to launch nationwide in the fall of 2004. The program is an initiative of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Atlanta is one of four pilot sites for the program. |
| What: | The NKDEP Atlanta Coalition will launch its “You Have the Power To Prevent Kidney Disease” education campaign with a kick-off event at Grady Memorial Hospital. The NKDEP program is especially relevant for the Atlanta community, which has a 40 percent higher prevalence of kidney failure than the national average. The Atlanta NKDEP program is aimed at increasing awareness and promoting early testing for those at risk, particularly African Americans, who make up 12 percent of the U.S. population but account for 30 percent of people with kidney failure.
The event will feature an information session conducted by medical professionals, kidney disease and dialysis patients, as well as representatives from the 28 organizations that make up the NKDEP Atlanta Coalition. Health screenings, nutritional information, educational materials, and other health-related information from participating organizations will be available to event participants. |
