Are you interested in a career with animals
and attending The Ohio State University?
The Department of Animal Sciences is hosting the fifth annual
Buckeye Animal Sciences Experience (B.A.S.E.) on campus.
This is an opportunity for high school students (from 8th grade
to seniors) to tour the Animal Units and the College of Veterinary
Medicine. You can attend interactive sessions conducted by faculty,
staff, and students about careers in Animal Sciences. Students
can learn about the exciting opportunities offered by the Department
of Animal Sciences such as student activities, study abroad
program, classes and programs, and career opportunities. There
is no charge and a noon meal will be provided to you.
This annual event is held in late April or early May. Information and application for the 2008 BASE Day is available at the links on the right.

Skillathon Team
Ohio State 4-H Livestock Skillathon
Team
The State 4-H Livestock Skillathon Team provides a learning
laboratory, which will enhance knowledge of the beef, sheep and
swine industries and issues facing these industries, all within
a fun setting. The skillathon team provides experiential learning
opportunities that develop critical thinking and problem solving
skills and tests ones ability to apply information. Also,
the team provides opportunities that develop and recognize teamwork.
Moreover, the team encourages youth to expand their knowledge
of the livestock industry and become proficient in livestock management
practices and quality assurance. Additionally, the team serves
as an award activity and trip for youth that have achieved superior
levels of performance in state competition. Therefore, the team
stimulates their learning processes, interest, and enthusiasm
of the livestock industries.
Requirements:
- Fill out and submit a State 4-H Livestock Skillathon application
(Available HERE
or through your county Extension office). Applications due by May 31!
- Attend ALL beef, sheep, and swine skillathons during
the summer (Ohio State Fair opportunities).
- Attend fall weekend practices during September and October at
The Ohio State University campus.
- Travel and compete at the National Invitational 4-H Livestock
Skillathon Contest in Louisville, Kentucky in November. Information
about the National Contest is available HERE.

Selection:
All participants will participate in practices throughout the
fall, but the final selection (the top scoring participants) for
the State team will take place around the first week in November.
The Team will consist of 4 members and 1or 2 alternates.

- Retail meat cut identification
- Livestock equipment identification
- Livestock breed identification
- Meat Judging Classes
- Hay Judging Classes
- Quality Assurance Exercise
- Livestock quiz
Team classes:
- Quality Assurance Exercise
- Evaluation of livestock feeding and performance information
- Feed tag knowledge and feed identification
- Animal breeding scenario and exercise

Livestock Judging
The Ohio 4-H Livestock Judging Team is selected from the Ohio State
Fair Livestock Judging Contest. The top 3 teams at the contest
are eligible to participate. The selected teams will
compete at several different national contests including the top team competiting at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky. Other trips include the Keystone International, National Western, Kansas City Royal, and other great contests!
The Ohio State Fair Livestock Judging Contest will be held Saturday, July
28. Registration starts at 11:00 a.m. with the contest beginning at
12:00 p.m. Awards will be presented at 6:00 p.m
Buckeye Livestock Judging Clinic- June 4-6
The clinic is designed to be an intensive workshop for youth 14-18 years old, who have interest or experience in livestock judging and want to go to the next level. The clinic will be an educational, fun, and interactive experience while covering evaluation principles for beef cattle, sheep, and swine. This clinic will provide the fundamentals of livestock judging and oral reasons, demonstrations, practice and coaching with video and live classes. 2008 Buckeye Livestock Judging Clinic Flyer
Champions Choice Jr. Showman Camp- May 9,10,11
This is for 4H members who may be interested in attending a show camp for sheep, cattle, and swine. **Application DEADLINE is APRIL 30th**This camp will be held at the Ohio State Fair grounds. Contact information is listed on the attached flyers or go to championschoicecamps.com. In addition to nutrition, selection, showing, and ethics seminars, a Saturday evening program sponsored by The Ohio State University Department of Animal Sciences will complete this educational experience for new and seasoned showmen. The cost will be $150 for goats, $200 for pigs and lambs, and $250 for steers.

Ohio State
Fair
The Ohio State Fair offers many educational opportunities for youth
enrolled in livestock projects. The 2006 Ohio State Fair is August 2-13
at the fairgrounds in Columbus, OH. During the course of the fair, many
youth will show their projects, participate in showmanship contests,
and compete in numerous skillathons. For more information about the
