The AKNHP botany program identifies, evaluates and monitors rare and endemic plant taxa and their specific occurrences in Alaska.

As part of the international network of Heritage Programs and Conservation Data Centers, we work cooperatively with NatureServe to assure consistent and accurate ranking and evaluation of rare plants on a global as well as statewide level.

All information is entered in NatureServe's Biological Conservation Database (BCD) and geographically referenced through a Geographic Information System (GIS).

A list of the rare plants that we track and their rankings can be found in our Vascular Plant Tracking List.

Detailed information on selected rare species can be found in the Alaska Rare Plant Field Guide.

Our program welcomes comments and input on our rare plant listings and we are especially eager to hear of new locations for rare plants or reports on the status of known locations. See our section on How to Contribute Data for instructions and to download data forms. You can submit sightings and locations of rare/threatened plants by clicking here for a survey form to download. Please fax the completed form to Rob Lipkin at 907-257-2789 or mail to Rob Lipkin, Botanist, Alaska Natural Heritage Program, 707 A Street, Anchorage, AK 99501.

We have been involved in numerous status reviews of rare species as well as floristic inventories of various regions in Alaska. Our work includes research into the ecology and systematics of rare plants. Recent efforts have also focused on the inventory of non-native plants and evaluation of their invasiveness (see Ecology Program).

Our information is routinely used by state and federal agencies and by the private sector in evaluating and minimizing environmental effects of proposed projects.

Past projects have been funded or supported by the U. S. Army and Air Force, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service, Forest Service, National Park Service.

The Program is currently collaborating with other state and federal agencies on Non-Native Plants of Alaska and the AKEPIC Database.
