Renewable and Energy Efficient Processes

Photocatalytic chemistry for removing hazardous chemicals from water, soils, or air has been an active area of work at NREL since 1988. Photochemical processing for indoor air quality and for mineralization of organics (for air and water purification) has involved catalyst development, small-scale engineering development, and off-site testing. Photochemistry in supercritical carbon dioxide has also been investigated. The photocatalytic group includes chemists, chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, and microbiologists. The group is available to assist companies interested in developments in the rapidly expanding applications of photocatalytic chemistry to indoor air purification, self-cleaning surfaces, disinfection, and environmental cleanup.
