Status and Rank

  • State Status: X - Presumed extirpated (legally 'threatened' if rediscovered)
  • State Rank: SX - Presumed extirpated
  • Global Rank: G4G5 - Rank is uncertain, ranging from apparently secure to secure

Occurrences

No known occurrences in Michigan

Information is summarized from MNFI's database of rare species and community occurrences. Data may not reflect true distribution since much of the state has not been thoroughly surveyed.

Habitat

This species is known from a single site, where a small colony of plants appeared in mature beech-maple woodlot previously explored by botanists who did not record it earlier. The colony subsequently disappeared. Given the somewhat suspicious conditions and the fact that this species is sometimes cultivated, it was recently determined that it was not likely native and the species has been proposed for delisting.

Natural Community Types

Associated Plants

Sugar maple and beech.

Management

This colony has not been observed in some time despite much searching of the locality. The species may persist in the region, although it has been noted that it may have been a garden escape. As with most trilliums, it would probably benefit from habitat protection and maintaining the forest canopy.

General Survey Guidelines

Random meander search covers areas that appear likely to have rare taxa, based on habitat and the judgement of the investigator.
