GK-12 at Lawton Community Schools
What's New?
The Lawton school year is flying by, and we have been busy! This year we are participating in an earthworm sampling project with many other districts in southwest Michigan. Students in Lawton are collecting worms in nearby ecosystems (a vineyard, a stream, the raingarden, the nature trail, and the schoolyard). We will share our data with other districts to learn more about the number of earthworms in southwest Michigan, and where they like to live.
|
Mrs. Angle's 7th graders caught earthworms in the raingarden.
We are also learning about photosynthesis, plant growth, the age of the earth, and decomposition. Check out our "Schoolyard Ecology," "Classroom Inquiry," and "Field Trips" links below to learn more about the inquiry-based science activities we are doing.

Lawton Project Overview
Lawton has been a member of the K-12 partnership since the beginning. Our teachers are dedicated to science and environmental literacy, and a large group always comes to KBS for the professional development workshops. Lawton has an extensive aquatic ecology program, with elementary students studying and visiting streams, middle school students studying and visiting wetlands, and high school students studying and visiting rivers.
Our 2006-2007 Fellow, Katie Lander, recently graduated from MSU with her MS in Plant Biology. Katie is working as an Environmental Educator in California. Our 2007-2008 Fellow, Lauren Kinsman, is continuing her Ph.D. studies at KBS. This year's fellow, Emily Grman, will be working with Susan Zygadlo (4th grade), Marcia Angle (7th-8th grades), and Holly Visich (10th grade).
