Geology and Soils
KBS lies on a landscape that was sculpted by glaciers that left till plains and upland end moraines a short distance to the north and outwash plains in the vicinityof the main site. Depressions or "kettle holes" are abundant throughout the area and often contain lakes or wetlands. Soils are variable but in uplands they are mostly well-drained loams that originally developed under deciduous forest or, in some places, oak savannas. The most common soil formations are alfisols that cover most of the upland areas, with histosols, mollisols, and entisols occupying lower-lying areas around lakes, wetlands, and stream.
