Nursery Services
The mission of the Nursery Program element is to prevent the introduction and spread of agricultural pests through nursery stock and protect agriculture and the consumer against economic losses resulting from the sale of inferior, defective, or pest-infested nursery stock. The Nursery Program fulfills two separate roles.
The first is to coordinate the nursery regulatory and inspection activities performed by the county agricultural commissioners. The second is to provide the agricultural industry with registration and certification services for plant materials.
Nursery Regulatory and Inspection Activities
This function is financed primarily through nursery license and acreage fees. Nursery regulatory activities conducted by the county agricultural commissioners and their staffs are an integral part of the State's agricultural pest prevention system. Nursery inspection and regulatory activities have prevented numerous pests from being disseminated throughout agricultural and suburban communities by prevention and/or eradication of pests at the nursery level. The quality of nursery stock has improved as a direct result of the regulation of nursery stock.
Plant Registration and Certification Services
The responsibility for this service is not shared with the county agricultural commissioners, but communication and cooperation with the commissioner is important because registered and certified nursery stock must also meet general nursery regulatory standards. We currently provide registration and certification services for the following: avocado, citrus, deciduous fruit and nut trees, seed garlic, grapevine, and strawberry nursery stock and nematode certification for nursery stock produced for farm planting.
Directory of Nurserymen and Others Licensed to Sell Nursery Stock in California
This directory lists all the licensed nurseries and nursery stock dealers in California. Copies of this Directory are available to California licensed nurserymen at a cost of $5.00 per copy. Persons other than licensees may obtain a copy at a cost of $25.00. Both prices include handling and mailing costs.
