Career Services Internships Student Employment ADA Guide

Career Services

Upon disclosure of a student's disability issues, The Harrington Center will
coordinate career development activities with the Academic Development Center.
These activities may include, but are not limited to resume writing assistance,
interview training, job search strategies, time management of internship
and job search steps, etc.  If warranted, The Harrington Center will work
cooperatively with outside services such as New Hampshire Employment Security
or Vocational Rehabilitation to assist the student with his/her career services needs.

Career counselors will not counsel students with disabilities towards more restrictive
careers than are recommended for students who do not have disabilities.  However,
career counselors will advise students with disabilities about strict licensing or
certification requirements in a given profession.

The Harrington Center for Career Development and Community Service is located
in Danforth Hall and  is accessible to all students.  Except for personal counseling
appointments, all services provided by The Harrington Center are accessible to students
at any location via the Internet.

Internships

The Harrington Center asks each student to sign an agreement that if he/she has a disability or limitation, he/she will disclose to the internship site any information that would enable the internship site to provide reasonable accommodation for participation in an internship.

In addition, each student signs a release form agreeing to assume full responsibility for any
undisclosed physical or emotional problems that might impair their ability to complete the
experience. If the student chooses to disclose, then the employer and Colby-Sawyer College

can work together to determine a reasonable accommodation. The internship policies for
students in the Internship Handbook clearly state that the student will assume full
responsibility for an undisclosed physical, mental or emotional problems that might
impair his/her ability to complete the internship experience.

Students who do disclose a disability to The Harrington Center as they prepare for
their internship experience will be assisted as stated in the Career Services section
of this document.

Student Employment

Federal work-study and Colby-Sawyer College work-study students are covered under
the same
ADA policies as regular employees, though they are considered temporary
employees.  All work-study job listings will include an ADA job function analysis.
This analysis will help determine if a job applicant with a disability is qualified to perform the job.  As is with any other employment situation, the student is responsible for disclosing a disability directly to the employer and should be prepared to provide supporting documentation.  The employer, in consultation with Human Resources, will make a reasonable accommodation if the disabled student is qualified and hired.

Summary

It is important for students with disabilities to understand their rights and responsibilities as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act. A Guide for People with Disabilities Seeking Employment is available for students with disabilities to help them become familiar with this law designed to prevent discrimination and enable individuals with disabilities to participate fully in all aspects of these work-related programs.
