January 2009. The public is invited to a series of meetings about the effects of sea level rise and the development of recommendations for dealing with rising sea levels. The meetings are sponsored by the New York State Sea Level Rise Task Force and will be held at four different locations. See below. The Midwest Office of the Land Trust Alliance invites you to submit presentation proposals for the 8th Annual Midwest Land Conservation Conference.  The Alliance is pleased to be partnering with Gathering Waters Conservancy this year.  The conference will be held at the University of Wisconsin - Extension's Pyle Center. Over 150 land trust practitioners, public agency professionals, and conservation leaders from 12 Midwestern states are expected to attend.  The conference will offer half-day seminars, full day seminars, and 90-minute workshops. 14-15 May 2009. 2009 Ohio Stormwater Conference is being hosted by the Mill Creek Watershed Council of Communities, Ohio Water Environment Association, Regional Storm Water Collaborative and the Tinkers Creek Watershed Partners which will be held at the Manor House, Mason, Ohio. Abstract submittal deadline is November 28, 2008. This two day event brings together participants from federal, state and municipal organizations, private consultants and engineers, academia and watershed organizations. Last year’s event drew 400 attendees, 55 exhibitors and 50 speakers. The sponsoring partners project a larger conference for 2009. This conference will focus on stormwater and watershed management. 18-20 May 2009. 20th Annual Nonpoint Source Pollution Conference will be held at Eastland Park Hotel, Portland, Maine. Since 1990, New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC), in partnership with its member states, has been coordinating the Annual Nonpoint Source (NPS) Pollution Conference, the premier forum in our region for sharing information and improving communication on NPS pollution issues and projects. The three-day conference brings together all those in New England and New York State involved in NPS pollution management, including participants from state, federal, and municipal governments, private sector, academia, and watershed organizations. 28-29 May 2009. Conserving Wetlands in British Columbia will be held in Revelstoke, British Columbia. Call for papers deadline is February 20, 2009. Reservoir creation, settlement, agricultural activities, transportation corridors, and other factors have eliminated many wetland complexes or diminished their natural form and function. This two-day event will examine the past, present, and possible future extent of wetlands; the reasons for these changes; and how a combination of conservation, management, restoration, stewardship strategies, and on-the-ground projects, can improve the ecological values of British Columbia's  wetlands. After the conference, a summary of the event will be posted on the CMI website along with a comprehensive list of groups working on wetland conservation in British Columbia. 10-11 June 2009. Carbon in Northern Forests: Integration of Research and Management will be held at the Hagerty Center in Traverse City, Michigan. This goal of this conference is  to explore the breadth of forest carbon science in the Lake States and Northeast regions and provide an opportunity for scientists to: (1) share and discuss research on carbon  pools and cycling in temperate and  boreal forests; (2) identify research needs in forest carbon science given natural and human disturbances and environmental change; and (3) highlight potential effects of management on carbon dynamics and suggest methods to increase carbon stored in forests and wood products.

Focus areas include:
 - Disturbance Effects on Forest Carbon Pools
 - Management Interaction with Forest Carbon Pools
 - Valuing Carbon as an Ecosystem Service
 - Bioenergy for Fossil Fuel Substitution and Carbon Sequestration

Abstracts for oral and poster presentations will be accepted until April 3, 2009.  Additionally, presenters will have the opportunity to submit manuscripts for a special issue of the journal FOREST SCIENCE.

The North Central Chapter of the Society of Wetland Scientists is pleased to be hosting the Society's 30th annual meeting which will be held at the Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center, Madison, Wisconsin with partners the Wisconsin Wetlands Association and the Wetland Biogeochemistry Symposium. The 2009 theme, Wetland Connections, is a deliberately broad and inclusive theme, and embodies this year's joint meeting of three groups that collectively represent the surprising breadth of wetland endeavors. The Annual Meeting program will include plenary talks, field trips, symposia, contributed oral sessions and a poster session. Currently there is a call for abstracts, which are due February 27, 2009. 7-10 July 2009. The 15th International Interdisciplinary Conference on the Environment will be held at the Shores Resort and Spa, Daytona Beach, Florida. The Interdisciplinary Environmental Association (IEA), an organization of academics and practitioners who approach environmental issues from interdisciplinary perspectives founded in 1994, announces a call for papers and posters. Abstract Deadline: May 17, 2009. The IEA calls for research that crosses the boundaries of traditional disciplines to frame environmental problems, propose working models, or address field, community, or academic issues. While any interdisciplinary environmental topic is welcome, areas of special interest in 2009 include Coastal Resource Impacts and Management; Environmental Ethics; Regional Water Resources and Pollution Issues; Environmental Impacts of Tourism; Climate Change and Coastal Areas, among other topics. Understanding the Clean Water Act: An Online Course
 
River Network is proud to announce the resurrection of the online course, Understanding the Clean Water Act. Users can now explore the course at: www.cleanwateract.org. The course is a companion to the book, The Clean Water Act Owner's Manual. Course content will help users isolate specific water quality problems, identify possible solutions, develop and leverage existing programs and build effective outreach tools. The course is appropriate for staff, interns, volunteers and board members interested in learning more about the force of the Clean Water Act and related tools. Even Clean Water Act old-timers will likely find something to ponder in the local stories, digging deeper and resources sections.  If you train staff or volunteers on the Act, you’ll also find some special training tools to help you get your points across.
