F. ROONEY DISTRICT 5 - ALLENTOWN GREATER DELAWARE VALLEY REGIONAL MEDICAL PROGRAM The Greater Delaware Valley Regional Medical Program covers Northeastern Pennsylvania, and portions of Delaware and New Jersey. The Coordinating Headquarters for this rather unique program is the University City Science Center in Philadelphia. The Science Center is a non-profit consortium involving the medical schools and research institutions in the area. The program is currently in the first year of planning and has received $1,531,494, in planning funds. The Regional Advisory Group is broadly representative of all the regional interests concerned with progress in prevention and care for heart disease, cancer and stroke. Due to the geographical diversity of the region, the Regional Medical Program will decentralize through the formation of ten subregions. These subregions, through their planning committees, will reflect local needs and interests and aid in the development of an over- all regional program. The planning activity'is concentrating on data analysis and monitoring the needs for health care and the determination of what types of educational activities would result in improved health care for the residents of the area. More specific details on the Greater Delaware Valley Regional Medical Program can be found in the following material. The responsibilities of the applicant have been assumed by a Program Committee, a policy-making body appointed by the Board of Directors of the University City Science Center. A Coordinating Committee is charged with the responsibility for the planning mechanisms and for recommending planning procedures to the Program Committee. More than 135 persons are actively contributing to the program either as full or part"time central staff members or as consultants. A number of them serve on the three committees which have been formed: Continuing Education, Data Gathering and Monitoring, and Categorical Diseases. Gr'eater Delaware Valley - 2 Subregional Development The diverse and extensive geographic area encompassed by the Greater Delaware Valley Region indicated the need for subregions. The work of subregionalization is now being carried out by an Area Liaison Staff. Three Area Liaison Offices have been opened in Wilmington, Delaware, Southern New Jersey, and Northeastern Pennsylvania, and 7 others are contemplated. Area-wide Committees are planned in each of the areas made up of community leaders. Together with the Liaison Officers who will offer constant advice and stimulus, they will plan local pro- grams which will reflect local needs and interests but which will be consonant with the overall RMP. Active steps have been taken to form Area-wide Committees in nine of the ten Areas. Regional Advisorv Group The Regional Advisory Group advises and consults with all the participating organizations. Members are appointed by the Board of the University City Science Center upon nomination by the Program Committee. Members of the Regional Advisory Group are broadly representative of the participating organizations and of the various geographic areas of the region. Planning Activities The Greater Delaware Valley Regional Medica 1 Program stands on a base of research, training, and service. This is reflected in the planning activities being carried on by key Subcommittees in: Data Analysis and Monitoring, Continuing Education and Categorical Diseases. 1) Continuing Education - As of the present, reporting on planning activities has been most complete in the area of continuing education. The Committee on Continuing Education whose members were chosen primarily for their@interest and competence in the field, is focusing on educational activity that would result in improvement in the care bf patients coming to the physician. Studies have been undertaken to analyze existing programs and to determine the types of programs needed. 2) The Activities of the Committees on Data Analysis and Monitoring, and .Categorical Diseases, are closely interwoven with those of the Committee on. Continuing Education. Each group is looking at improving the delivery of health care from a different point of view. The composite picture they present should enable the Coordinating Committee and the Program Committee to develop a varied and meaningful program.
