How to Apply to Become an Effective Supplemental Services Provider

Office of Innovation and Improvement
and the
Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives
U.S. Department of Education

On January 8, 2002, President George W. Bush signed his education plan, the No Child Left Behind Act, into law. This law united both political parties behind the principle that schools must be held accountable for their results and that every child must learn. As part of this law, when an economically disadvantaged child is attending a low-performing school as determined by the state, federal funds can be used to provide supplemental services for that child. The term "supplemental services" refers to extra academic help provided to students in reading, language arts and math. This extra help can be offered before or after school or on weekends and can be provided by a variety of entities, including faith-based and community organizations. Interested organizations must apply to their state's education agency to become a provider.

In an effort to provide technical assistance to faith-based and community organizations, the Office of Innovation and Improvement and the Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives have produced a Webcast that is intended to help faith-based and community organizations apply to become approved providers of supplemental services.

The Webcast is best seen using a high-speed Internet connection. A local library may offer such a connection.

The Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives also has developed a user friendly Toolkit for organizations interested in applying to become supplemental services providers.
