Location | Meet in Tacoma. To find our starting point: From I-5, take Exit 133 (Tacoma City Center) and follow signs to Ruston Way. Once on Ruston Way get in the left lane and follow it as it goes up and over lower Ruston Way. When you come to a light go through it and follow the road until you see C.I. Shenanigans Restaurant on the right. At the next left (1 block) take North Alder Way and turn immediately into the parking lot on the right. Park and walk back to North Alder Way. Go right under the RR Bridge and in a block you will see our banner hanging (Puget Creek Restoration Society). That is where we will meet. |

Twin Falls State Park: Mosses, Ferns, Twigs and Old Dead Stalks led by Stewart Wechsler. Don’t let winter give you the botany blues. Come enjoy the flora when the narrow bloom times of spring aren’t distracting you. We’ll head to Twin Falls State Park and follow a trail above the South Fork Snoqualmie River through a rain forest of mature Bigleaf Maples thickly clothed in mosses. Mosses of many sorts will also be seen on logs, rocks and the duffy forest floor, from Rhytidadelphus loreus to the miniature palm tree Leucolepis menziesii and the splendid Stair step Moss—Hylocomium splendens. Maidenhair ferns, Adiantum aleuticum, are scattered along the trail. We may see Corydalis scouleri already sending up foliage for next year’s crop. Will the native Reticulate Taildropper slugs, Prophysaon andersoni, still be feasting on the fungi? You may want to bring binoculars for any woodpeckers, owls or other birds we may see. To repay the ecosystem for the show, participants will be encouraged to lower the local population of noxious invasive weeds by pulling one Wall Lettuce (Mycelis/Lactuca muralis), or doing The Twist on top of a Stinky Bob (Geranium robertianum). And, of course, we’ll view the waterfalls for which the park is named. Limit of 12 participants. |
