Legislation

The Tamarisk Coalition focuses on the harmful effects of tamarisk and Russian olives in western riparian ecosystems for two reasons -

  1. Tamarisk and Russian olive are very detrimental to the environment with very real ecological consequences.
  2. They are high profile, highly visible plants that focus attention on ailing western river corridors.

We believe that it is essential to control the proliferation of tamarisk and Russian olive to protect the health of our watersheds, water resources, and wildlife habitat. We also believe that our rivers need the type of long term protection, monitoring, and maintenance that would prevent such calamities from reaching critical mass in the future.

It is difficult to protect public resources in the long-term without enforceable legislation to promote change.

For these reasons the Coalition is excited that several state and federal policies are currently in place to support the removal of tamarisk and Russian olives and we hope to see more of the same in the future!
