Premises and Animal Identification
The United
States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has launched an initiative,
the National Animal Identification System (NAIS), to identify livestock
and record certain movements over the course of their lifespan. The
goal of NAIS is to have the capability to identify all animals and
premises that have had direct contact with a foreign animal disease
or a domestic disease of concern within 48 hours after discovery.

Protecting American animal agriculture by safeguarding animal
health is vital to the well being of all U. S. citizens. It promotes
human health; provides wholesome, reliable, and secure food resources;
mitigates national economic threats; and enhances a sustainable
environment. Essential to achieving this goal is an efficient and
effective animal traceability program.
