Regarding the Zebra Mussel Die-Off in KS and OK
Posted: 1/8/2008
At the 100th Meridian meeting in Vegas we discussed the potential reasons why our (Oklahoma & Kansas) Zebra Mussels have died off. I've conferred with our experts and we agree that many of the Zebra Mussels were nearing the end of their life cycle when the two hot and dry 2005-2006 summers hit. The two hot summers were probably enough, since all age classes experienced a significant die off. The survivors, although few, have been reproducing throughout this mild and wet 2007 year. However, the high flows that we've had this year probably hindered optimum reproduction survival, since many veligers probably settled at high elevations and were stranded when the waters receded. We do expect the densities to rebound eventually, especially if 2008 is mild also. If it is another hot one, the population may be set back again. I guess the news for western (hot) states is that our naturally occurring environmental conditions (hot & dry seasons) may have significant impacts on Zebra Mussel population densities. Especially with a fluctuating pool. You might want to post this on the 100th Meridian website for those western state contacts that were asking at the meeting. If you have any additional questions, just let me know. Thanks! Everett Laney, Biologist U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Tulsa District, PE-E 1645 S. 101 E. Ave. Tulsa, OK 74128-7546 918-669-7411

Quagga Mussels at Lake Mead!
Posted: 1/9/2007
On Saturday, January 6, 2007, live quagga mussels (a similar species to the zebra mussel) were found in Lake Mead (which straddles the Arizona/Nevada Border). Quagga mussels (sometimes also called zebra mussels) are difficult to distinguish from zebra mussels and pose the same threats. Invasive mussels have been found at two locations within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and at the Lake Mead Fish Hatchery. National Park Service divers have confirmed an established population of mussels near the initial discovery site. This is the first population established west of the continental divide and is approxiametly 1000 miles west of any previously documented quagga or zebra mussel population. A special section of 100thmeridian.org has been created to hold information regarding this pivotal discovery. Please see our Lake Mead Section for more information (last updated 1-10-2007). The Official Press Release was released by the National Park Service on 1-10-2007. Authorities are currently examining the situation and are evaluating a rapid response strategy. Additional details will be posted here as they are uncovered.

More Mussels in Kansas
Posted: 12/22/2006
I have the unfortunate task of informing you of another zebra mussel infestation in Kansas. Zebra mussels were discovered at Winfield City Lake this week. Winfield City Lake is a 1,250 acre water supply lake for the City of Winfield located 10 miles NE of Winfield in Cowley County. We are working with the city to determine to correct course of action. We are reminded once again how important it is to work with the public to inform them of the precautions that must be taken to prevent the further spread of zebra mussels and other harmful aquatic nuisance species.

Zebra Mussels in Claremore City Lake, OK
Posted: 6/21/2005
An angler found an adult zebra mussel near a water line in Claremore City Lake, Oklahoma that flows from Lake Oologah. Breck Henry, a game warden for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation confirmed the identification. Everett Laney, an invasive species biologist for the US Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District, said that this was "a new, but expected lake infestation" since Claremore City Lake draws water from Lake Oologah.

Concord, NH - The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services has confirmed that non-native and nuisance zebra mussels were detected earlier this week on a boat at Fay's Boat Yard in Gilford. Zebra Mussels in Montana!
Posted: 3/31/2005
Eileen Ryce, ANS Coordinator for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, recently reported that Zebra Mussels were found on a boat planning to launch in Montana on March 25, 2005. This is the first report of Zebra Mussels in Montana. The boat was a 1800 Lund Fisherman (a typical walleye fishing boat) that came from Elkhart Indiana where the boater purchased it from Harbor Island Marine. The boater trailered his new acquisition across the 100th Meridian and intended to launch it at Canyon Ferry Reservoir in Montana. Ryce was happy to point out that the owner of the boat knew enough about zebra mussels to call Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks after discovering them. Montana FW&P got the call Thursday afternoon and were at the owner's house on Friday to do an inspection. Ryce said "we were very fortunate in that we had a huge snow storm last week, otherwise the boat probably would have been in the water before we knew anything about it." She gave the owner details on how to clean his boat and witnessed him flush a bleach solution through his livewells and bilge. Ryce reported that the mussels attached to the outside of the boat were all dead. However, the bilge and livewells were full of water and likely contained viable veligers. Thanks to an excellent job done by Montana FW&P, another catastrophe has been averted. Boater education does promote responsibility.

Zebra Mussel Locations
Posted: 12/7/2004
A list of confirmed zebra-mussel locations is being compiled. The idea is that a simple list will help folks surveying boaters to quickly identify boats that may need close inspection if the boater mentions that he or she has been to one of the listed lakes. If you would like to add to our list, let us know.

Zebra Mussels found on Boat at Lake Mead...Again!
Posted: 10/16/2004
For the third time this year, zebra mussels have been confirmed on a boat preparing to launch at Lake Mead. The boat was discovered prior to launch and will be decontaminated before it is allowed to enter the lake. Fortunately, all mussels found thus far on boats at Lake Mead have been dead. To date, live zebra mussels have not been found at Lake Mead.

High Mussel Densities in Oologah
Posted: 9/7/2004
According to Joe Bidwell (Oklahoma State University), concrete panels that have been hanging at Redbud Marina at Oologah Reservoir since last year containedd an average density of ~155,000 zebra mussels per square meter. This is similar to maximum densities seen on the same size panels in Lake Erie in the early 1990's.

More Mussels in Kansas
Posted: 9/7/2004
Zebra mussel veligers were found in plankton samples at Cheney Reservoir, KS on Aug 4, 2004. These were identified by Dr. Jim Schooley, Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. Cheney is a water supply lake for Wichita located on the Ninnescah River in SE Reno County, approximately 20 miles west of Wichita. The density of veligers was about 1.5/l, however as yet, no adults have been found. -Tom Mosher, Fisheries Research Coordinator, Kansas Wildlife & Parks
